Short answer: Tile and grout are not waterproof on their own. What keeps water out of your walls is the waterproofing layer behind the tile, a membrane over the walls and shower pan. Skip it or do it wrong and the damage shows up years later.
Why grout is not enough
Grout is porous. Water gets through it over time, which is normal, as long as there is a waterproof layer behind it.
Sheet membranes and liquid membranes
Some systems use a sheet membrane over the walls and pan, others use a painted-on liquid membrane. Both work when installed right and seams, corners and penetrations are sealed.
- Seams overlapped and sealed
- Inside corners reinforced
- Valve and shower-head penetrations sealed
- Niches waterproofed like the walls
Why it matters in the Northwest
Damp climate plus a leaky shower is a recipe for mold. Good waterproofing and a properly sized vent fan are your best defense.
